Hand tools: If you want to do some rough-out with hand tools, which I often do to keep the dust down, here are some that move wood quickly:
- A favorite carving knive
- A shallow sweep, #3 or #5, (fishtail) gouge
- I use palm-type hand tools for better control on small projects.
Power Tools:
- Bring your NSK, Gesswin, Foredom, Dremel flex-shaft tool.
- A dust collector (available from Cascade Carvers Supply)
- Your bit box needs the following, or something similar:
- 3/8" Diameter Ball Nose Cylinder Typhoon or Kutzall carbide cutter
- 3/8" to 1/2" Ruby or diamond flame shape
- 1/8" Ruby or Diamond Ball
- a 1/4" inverted cone shape "pink stone" bit.
- A split mandrel for "roll yer own" sandpaper
- AND a power outlet strip, swing arm light, pencils.
Painting: Bring a few of your favorite brushes for applying the acrylic washes, mainly sable rounds #3 and #5, and a couple small detail brushes also. Note: Cascade Carvers carries NO brushes.
Your class material fee ($40) covers the following materials that I will bring for the project: one wood cutout, class reference handouts, glass eyes, habitat materials, acrylic paints, sealer and various supplies.
That's about it. I am really looking forward to the class and a great week of carving with you all. ....Doug
